Odisha constable burnt to death by wife, brother-in-law

Berhampur: The family members of an Odisha motor vehicle department constable, who was allegedly burned to death by his police constable wife and brother-in-law, staged a night-long road blockade with the body at Pandav Nagar here, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. They called off their protest on Saturday morning after the superintendent of police (SP) and Berhampur sub-collector assured them of an impartial inquiry into his death.

Ashutosh Mrudungi (31) succumbed to his burn injuries on Friday while being treated at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Sustaining around 80% burn injuries, he was first admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here after the incident occurred on the night of June 5, before being shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar when his condition worsened.

The family members and local people demanded the arrest of his wife Sandhya Nayak (32), who worked at the police reserve office here, and brother-in-law Debesh.

“We have lodged an FIR against the duo after the incident. Police have also registered a case against them. They, however, were not taking action against the duo,” said Nivedita Devi, sister of the deceased.

Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M said they assured the family members of an impartial investigation. “Action will be taken against the culprits after completing an inquiry,” said the SP.

Berhampur sub-collector Avinash Kumar said they assured the family members of facilitating the govt benefits following the death.

Sources said the incident took place near the wife’s quarters at Bijipur area, when Mrudungi went to visit her. Initially, police suspected it might be a self-immolation case.

Police said they had got married about one-and-a-half years ago. The couple had domestic disputes and cases under domestic violence and dowry torture were registered at Koraput Town police station on Nov 31, 2025, and Berhampur Mahila police station on May 18 on the complaints of Nayak. He was arrested and later released on bail on June 3.
