Norwegian Authorities Release Surveillance Footage in US Embassy Explosion Probe
Norwegian police have taken a significant step in their investigation into the explosion that rocked the entrance of the United States embassy in Oslo. On Monday, officials released two critical surveillance images captured from security camera footage, depicting a man suspected of being directly involved in the incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday.
Grappling with a Shadowy Figure: The Suspect's Description
The photographs, which appear grainy and indistinct, show an individual dressed entirely in dark-colored clothing with a hood pulled over his head. The suspect has his head tilted downward, a posture that casts a deep shadow across his face, effectively obscuring any identifiable features. Authorities have explicitly noted that the man's face is not visible in the released images, complicating the identification process.
In the footage, the individual is seen carrying a backpack near the entrance to the embassy's consular section shortly before the explosion occurred at approximately 1:00 am local time. Police believe this person placed an improvised explosive device (IED) at the location, which subsequently detonated. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the blast, although it did cause minor damage to the embassy building structure.
An Ongoing Investigation with Multiple Angles
In an official statement, police confirmed that "the individual has still not been identified, and we have no specific suspects", adding that no arrests have been made to date. Investigators emphasized that efforts to identify the suspect are continuing "at full capacity".
The probe is examining several possible motives for the attack. Authorities are actively considering whether the incident constitutes an act of terror. Furthermore, police disclosed they are exploring a potential connection to the ongoing and heightened tensions in the Middle East, although they stressed that no theory has been confirmed at this stage.
Digital Clues and Heightened Security Measures
A notable digital element has emerged in the investigation. Investigators are scrutinizing a video that briefly appeared on the Google Maps page for the US embassy around the time of the explosion. The clip, which has since been removed, reportedly featured imagery of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to reports from Norwegian public broadcaster NRK, the person who uploaded the video included a Persian language caption stating, "God is great. We are victorious." Police confirmed they are conducting several inquiries related to this video but declined to provide further commentary.
In response to the explosion, security has been significantly stepped up around the US embassy, as well as other American, Israeli, and Jewish sites across Norway. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre condemned the incident, describing it as "very serious and completely unacceptable".
Scene Assessment and National Threat Level
Photographs from the aftermath of the blast painted a vivid picture of the damage. The scene showed shattered glass scattered across the snow outside the embassy entrance, visible cracks in a thick glass door, and distinct scorch marks on the ground. Overhead lamps were seen hanging loosely from exposed wiring, indicating the force of the explosion.
Norway's domestic security service, known as PST, is actively assisting the police investigation. Despite the serious nature of the event, officials stated that the national threat level remains unchanged. It is currently set at three on a five-point scale, a level it has maintained since November 2024. Prime Minister Støre sought to reassure the public, stressing that there is currently nothing to suggest that residents in Oslo or elsewhere in Norway face an immediate danger.
The investigation remains wide open as authorities work to identify the hooded figure in the surveillance images and determine the precise motive behind the explosive attack on diplomatic soil.
