Noida Police Cracks Down on Dating App Gang: Four Arrested for Systematic Robbery and Blackmail
In a significant breakthrough, Noida police have apprehended four members of a criminal gang that was actively involved in robbing and blackmailing unsuspecting individuals they had contacted through a popular online dating application. The arrests were made on Thursday following a detailed investigation into multiple complaints of similar incidents across the city.
Gang Members and Seized Items
The accused have been identified as Sushank Singh, Praveen, Rohit Kumar, and Babu. Police officials confirmed that all four individuals have an educational background up to Class 10-12. During the arrest, authorities recovered a diamond solitaire, a gold chain, and cash amounting to Rs 14,530 from their possession, which are believed to be proceeds from their illicit activities.
Modus Operandi: A Calculated Scheme
According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Manisha Singh, the gang meticulously executed their crimes by creating fraudulent profiles on the dating app Grindr. Using fake identities, they established contact with potential victims and arranged meetings at rented accommodations. The gang's strategy was designed to exploit trust and vulnerability for financial gain.
The operation came to light after a formal complaint was filed at the Sector 126 police station on March 23, detailing a similar incident. Investigations revealed that Sushank Singh and Rohit Kumar were the masterminds behind the gang, orchestrating crimes with systematic precision. To evade detection, the accused rented rooms using counterfeit Aadhaar cards and concealed their true identities. They employed multiple mobile numbers and fake profiles across various dating platforms to carefully select their targets.
The Blackmail and Robbery Process
Once a victim agreed to meet, they were lured to a rented room under the guise of a date. The gang members would then manipulate the situation to place the victim in a compromising position. Other accomplices were called in to record photos and videos, which were subsequently used as leverage for blackmail.
Victims were threatened with the circulation of these compromising materials to their families and social contacts. Under intense fear and pressure, they were coerced into handing over cash, jewellery, and other valuables. In several instances, the gang also forced victims to transfer money online. Resistance was met with physical assault, adding to the trauma experienced by the targets.
Gang's Criminal History and Ongoing Investigations
Police disclosed that the gang had been operational for a considerable period, targeting numerous individuals using identical tactics. Background checks revealed that Rohit Kumar has a prior criminal record and had previously been incarcerated in another case. Authorities suspect that the gang may have victimized many more people and are currently investigating additional complaints linked to the group.
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigation is underway to uncover the full extent of their criminal operations and identify any other accomplices.
Police Advisory and Previous Incidents
In response to these events, police officials have issued a stern advisory urging citizens to exercise extreme caution while interacting with strangers on online platforms, particularly dating applications. Users are advised against sharing personal information and are encouraged to avoid meeting unknown individuals in isolated or private locations without proper verification.
This incident is not isolated in Noida. Earlier this year, several similar cases were reported:
- On January 15, a youth was held hostage and robbed in Sector 39 after being invited to meet through a dating app.
- On February 3, miscreants robbed a victim at knifepoint in Sector 58 after luring him for a date.
- Another incident in the Expressway area involved assault and forced online money transfer.
- On March 28, a victim was blackmailed for Rs 50,000 after being enticed to meet through a dating platform, leading to the arrest of three persons in a case registered at the Sector 113 police station.
Platform Misuse and Digital Safety
Grindr, a location-based dating and social networking application widely used to connect with nearby individuals, has been misused by criminals creating fake profiles to target users. This highlights an urgent need for increased public awareness and digital caution. Police emphasize that while such platforms offer connectivity, they also pose risks if users do not remain vigilant about their online interactions and personal safety.
