Nashik Municipal Corporation Employee Faces FIR for Rs 18 Lakh Property Tax Fraud
A sanitation worker employed by the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has been officially booked by authorities for allegedly misappropriating close to Rs 18 lakh through a deceptive scheme targeting property taxpayers in the Panchavati locality of Nashik city. The incident has sparked significant concern within the civic administration, highlighting vulnerabilities in tax collection processes.
Details of the Alleged Scam and Investigation
According to a press release issued by the Nashik Municipal Corporation, the accused individual, who was attached to the solid waste management department, is suspected of collecting property tax dues in cash from residents over a period spanning from September 10, 2025, to January 19, 2026. Instead of depositing these funds into the municipal treasury, the worker allegedly retained the money for personal use, leading to a substantial financial loss for the civic body.
An internal inquiry conducted by the NMC revealed that the total amount misappropriated amounted to Rs 17.63 lakh, underscoring the scale of the alleged fraud. The investigation was prompted by discrepancies in tax records and reports from affected taxpayers, which raised red flags about the collection activities in the Panchavati area.
Legal Action and Consequences for the Accused
Based on a formal complaint lodged by Assistant Superintendent Uday Khairnar of the Nashik Municipal Corporation, the Panchavati police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the sanitation worker. The FIR charges the individual with cheating and misappropriation of public funds, marking a serious legal step in addressing the corruption case.
In response to the findings, the Nashik Municipal Corporation has taken immediate disciplinary action by suspending the employee from duty. This move aims to prevent further misconduct and ensure accountability within the municipal workforce. The NMC has also assured the public that measures are being implemented to strengthen oversight and prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing a commitment to transparent governance.
The case has drawn attention to the need for enhanced safeguards in cash-based tax collection systems, particularly in urban areas like Nashik. Authorities are urging taxpayers to utilize digital payment methods to reduce risks of fraud and improve efficiency in municipal revenue management.
