In a tragic incident, a newly married man died by suicide in Phagwara, Punjab, after allegedly enduring continuous harassment from his wife and her family. The deceased has been identified as Bharat Sharma, a resident of Subhash Nagar. He was the only son in his family and had two sisters. Sharma had been married only about one-and-a-half months ago.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, Bharat Sharma died by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his room. Family members alleged that he had been under immense mental pressure due to persistent harassment from his wife, Sakshi Lahoria, and her parents, Anil Lahoria and Mona Lahoria, all residents of Nawanshahr. The victim's brother-in-law, Jimmy Karwal, lodged a complaint with the City Phagwara Police, stating that the harassment had driven Bharat to severe mental distress, ultimately leading him to take the extreme step.
Police Action and Investigation
Acting on the complaint, the City Phagwara Police registered a case against the deceased's wife, mother-in-law, and father-in-law on charges of abetment of suicide under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Phagwara SP Madhvi Sharma stated, “Further legal proceedings have been initiated and a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain all facts surrounding the incident.” At the time of filing this report, the accused were yet to be arrested. Police confirmed that efforts are being made to investigate the allegations and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.

The incident has sparked concern in the area, with residents expressing shock over the death of a young man who had recently started his married life.
