Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari Assumes Office as 55th Chief Justice of Madras High Court

In a significant development for the Indian judiciary, Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari was sworn in as the 55th Chief Justice of the Madras High Court on Friday. The oath of office was administered by Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi during a brief ceremony held at Lok Bhavan at 12:30 PM. This appointment marks a new chapter for the high court, with Chief Justice Dharmadhikari succeeding Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, who retired on Thursday.

A Vision for Judicial Excellence and Partnership

In his inaugural address, Chief Justice Dharmadhikari emphasized the critical partnership between the Bench and the Bar, describing them as collaborators in the pursuit of justice rather than mere components of a system. He stated, "The Bench and the Bar are often described as two wheels of the same chariot; however, I prefer to see us as partners in the quest. A judge is only as good as the assistance he receives from the Bar." He praised the Madras Bar for its legendary reputation, highlighting its independence, scholarly approach, earnestness, and wit.

Core Priorities Outlined by the New Chief Justice

Chief Justice Dharmadhikari outlined three key areas of focus for his tenure:

  • Reduction of Pendency: Addressing the backlog of cases to ensure timely justice delivery.
  • Technology and Accessibility: Leveraging digital tools to make the court system more efficient and accessible to the public.
  • Empowering the Junior Bar: Supporting and nurturing young lawyers to strengthen the legal profession.

He expressed his commitment to maintaining the court's reputation as a beacon of fairness, integrity, and hope, urging collective efforts from all stakeholders.

Background and Career of Chief Justice Dharmadhikari

Originally from Raipur in Chhattisgarh, Chief Justice Dharmadhikari brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He earned his bachelor's degrees in commerce and law from Nagpur University and began his legal career by enrolling as an advocate in the Madhya Pradesh court in 1992. Prior to this appointment, he served at the Kerala High Court, from where he was transferred to take up this prestigious position in Chennai.
