The Nashik traffic police, now equipped with live CCTV feeds from signals across the city, are set to issue electronic challans to erring city bus drivers. This move comes as part of a broader crackdown on traffic violations, leveraging technology to enhance road safety and discipline.
Immediate Impact of CCTV Surveillance on Traffic Behavior
The installation of CCTVs at key traffic signals and the subsequent generation of e-challans have created significant awareness among motorists. Senior officers from the city traffic branch reported a substantial drop in traffic rule violations on Saturday, compared to the previous day when the e-challan system was officially launched. This indicates a positive shift in driver behavior, with many now adhering to signals more strictly.
Focus on City Bus Drivers for Enhanced Safety
Despite the overall improvement, police have identified city bus drivers as a particular concern. These drivers are frequently observed halting vehicles beyond the designated stop lines or jumping signals, posing risks to public safety. Over the past three years, several accidents involving city buses have occurred, some resulting in fatalities, prompting this targeted action.
To address these issues, the city police initiated workshops for bus drivers in batches starting November 2025. These sessions sensitize drivers on critical aspects such as wearing seatbelts, avoiding cellphone use while driving, adhering to road signals, maintaining appropriate speed limits, and refraining from overspeeding or unnecessary lane cutting.
Public Feedback and Community Concerns
Residents like Vishal Ahire, an IT professional from Satpur, have expressed support for stricter enforcement. "All people commuting on two-wheelers in the city can attest to the aggressive driving style of some city bus drivers," he noted. "Common practices include honking while overtaking from the wrong side to intimidate bikers, as well as abrupt braking and overspeeding. While not all bus drivers are reckless, those violating rules deserve fines to ensure safer roads for everyone."
