Nagpur Police Defy Protocol to Save Pregnant Woman During President's Convoy
In a remarkable display of humanity over protocol, Nagpur police personnel created an emergency corridor to rush a pregnant woman in labour pain to AIIMS on Wednesday. The woman had become trapped due to the stringent security cordon established for President Droupadi Murmu's convoy on the Nagpur-Wardha road.
Bold Decision Amidst Security Restrictions
The incident unfolded around 12:45 PM as the President's convoy was returning from AIIMS to Lok Bhavann, the Governor's house. A patrolling team from Beltarodi police station received a desperate distress call from Chinchbhuvan Square. A companion of the pregnant woman, who was traveling in a cab, had exited the vehicle to urgently confront police officers about the critical situation.
Assistant Police Inspector Pankaj Kakde, Head Constable Prashant Thaokar, and Constable Ajay Neware immediately sprang into action. They coordinated with the control room and Senior Inspector Mukund Kawade, recognizing the life-threatening urgency.
Rapid Response and Community Assistance
With assistance from bystanders, the officers cleared a narrow passage by moving aside approximately 80 to 100 vehicles, including two-wheelers and four-wheelers, that were obstructing the road. Inspector Kawade explained that traffic had been completely halted as the President's convoy approached Chhinchbhuvan.
"The pregnant woman appeared to require immediate medical attention. The police officers had no time to seek formal permissions and were compelled to make a courageous decision," stated Kawade. He emphasized that the team prioritized human life over strict security protocols.
Going Beyond Duty to Ensure Safety
In an additional protective measure, Kawade directed a motorcycle-borne police officer to escort and pilot the pregnant woman's car directly to the hospital, guaranteeing her safe arrival. This swift action ensured the woman reached AIIMS promptly for necessary medical care.
The officers' decision to relax the zero-tolerance guidelines for VVIP movement represented a significant professional risk. According to established rules, any security breach during such high-profile events could have resulted in severe disciplinary actions, including potential job loss for those involved.
This incident highlights the delicate balance between unwavering security protocols and compassionate crisis response, showcasing Nagpur police's dedication to public welfare even in the most challenging circumstances.
