In a shocking turn of events, a young man facing murder charges in Nagpur has been arrested for peddling high-grade narcotics. The accused, out on bail, allegedly resorted to selling the dangerous drug Mephedrone (MD) to sustain his expensive lifestyle and cover mounting legal expenses.
High-Speed Chase Leads to Narcotics Seizure
The arrest unfolded dramatically on Friday when a team from the Kalamna police station, operating under the guidance of Senior Inspector Praveen Kale and Zonal DCP Niketan Kadam, spotted the suspect. The officials signaled Qadir alias Baba Zakir Khan (23) to stop his two-wheeler near the Shitala Mata Mandir. Instead of complying, Khan accelerated, sparking a risky high-speed chase through the city streets.
Police officers pursued him tenaciously, finally managing to corner and apprehend him near the height barricade close to the Gulshan Nagar tunnel. A subsequent search, conducted in the presence of witnesses, led to the discovery of 25 grams of premium MD powder concealed in his pocket. According to police investigations, Khan had sourced the narcotics from Mumbai.
Funding a Lavish Lifestyle and Legal Battle
Investigations revealed a desperate motive behind the crime. Qadir Khan, who is currently out on bail in a murder case, turned to drug peddling as a quick revenue stream. Police stated that the proceeds from selling Mephedrone were intended to fund his lavish personal expenses and the significant legal fees arising from his ongoing murder trial.
Along with the narcotics, valued at approximately Rs 4 lakh, the police confiscated two mobile phones and his motorcycle. The total value of the seized items is estimated at Rs 3.61 lakh. A formal case has been registered against Khan under Sections 8(a) and 22(b) of the stringent NDPS Act at the Kalamna police station.
Part of a Larger Crackdown: Operation Thunder
This arrest is not an isolated incident but a key achievement under Commissioner of Police Ravinder Singal's aggressive anti-narcotics drive, dubbed "Operation Thunder." The campaign takes a hardline approach, targeting the entire drug supply chain—sellers, possessors, and consumers—to root out the menace from Nagpur.
In a related success earlier this week, the Kalamna police team also intercepted a massive consignment of 62 kilograms of ganja from two other peddlers. These consecutive seizures underscore the police department's intensified efforts to make the city drug-free under this flagship initiative.
The arrest of Qadir Khan highlights a disturbing trend where individuals embroiled in serious legal battles resort to further criminal activities to manage their finances, creating a vicious cycle of crime. The Nagpur Police's vigilant action under Operation Thunder aims to sever such cycles and dismantle local drug networks.
