Nagpur Man Faces Charges for Allegedly Driving Live-in Partner to Suicide
In a tragic incident that has shocked the Nagpur community, the Bajaj Nagar police have formally registered a case against a 46-year-old man, Shashank Gajbhiye, for his alleged role in abetting the suicide of his live-in partner, 51-year-old numerologist Reshma Rewatkar. The case, filed on Friday, marks a significant development following the initial registration of an accidental death report.
Background of the Relationship and Alleged Abuse
Reshma Rewatkar, who had divorced her husband in 2019, was residing with the accused, Shashank Gajbhiye, in the Tatya Tope Nagar area of Nagpur. According to police statements, their relationship was marred by severe conflict and alleged mistreatment. Authorities report that Gajbhiye repeatedly subjected Rewatkar to character suspicion, harassment, and physical beatings, creating an environment of sustained mental and physical torture.
The Final Incident and Tragic Outcome
The situation escalated dramatically on April 9, when Gajbhiye is alleged to have assaulted and tortured Reshma once again. Overwhelmed by the trauma and unable to endure further abuse, Reshma took a drastic step late on April 10. She jumped from the second floor of her residence, resulting in fatal injuries and her subsequent death.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Initially, the Bajaj Nagar police station recorded the incident as an accidental death. However, the case took a critical turn following a formal complaint lodged by the deceased's daughter. Prompted by this complaint, the police have now invoked the relevant Indian Penal Code section pertaining to abetment of suicide against Shashank Gajbhiye. This legal move underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the police's commitment to pursuing justice in this distressing matter.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining the circumstances leading to Reshma Rewatkar's death to establish the full extent of Gajbhiye's involvement. This case highlights the grave consequences of domestic abuse and the legal ramifications for those accused of driving individuals to such desperate acts.
