A violent dispute over the dumping of construction sand in a residential area of Nagpur left a 68-year-old man with grievous injuries, leading to a police case and arrest. The incident, which occurred on December 12 in the New Indora area of Jaripatka, escalated from a verbal argument into a physical attack, captured in a video that later spread widely online.
What Sparked the Violent Confrontation?
The trouble began when a truck arrived to deliver sand for an ongoing house construction. The complainant, a woman named Twinkle, stated that her father, 68-year-old Narendra Shende, was supervising the unloading. The family claimed they had obtained the necessary permission from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) for dumping the material on what they believed was public land and had paid a fee of Rs 2,000 for it.
However, their neighbours, identified as Rakhi Manvatkar (35) and her husband Sandeep Manvatkar (38), strongly objected. The Manvatkars asserted that the land in question belonged to them, not the municipal corporation. This disagreement quickly turned into a heated exchange of words.
The Argument Turns into a Brutal Assault
According to the police complaint, the situation deteriorated when Rakhi Manvatkar allegedly began hurling abuses at Twinkle. Enraged by the altercation, Sandeep Manvatkar went into his house, fetched a wooden stick, and launched a violent attack.
He first targeted the complainant, Twinkle. Her father, Narendra Shende, intervened to protect his daughter, but Sandeep then turned the weapon on the elderly man. The assault was brutal and left Shende with serious injuries.
Severe Injuries and Police Action
Narendra Shende was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Mankapur for urgent medical treatment. The doctors found he had sustained multiple injuries, including a broken nasal bone and head wounds that required five stitches. He also suffered significant blows to his neck, ankle, and eye during the attack.
Acting on the complaint, the Jaripatka police registered a case under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, which has replaced the Indian Penal Code. The charges included provisions for causing grievous hurt. After confirming the severity of the injuries, police added stricter charges to the case.
On December 14, the police arrested the main accused, Sandeep Manvatkar. As part of their investigation, they seized the wooden stick used in the assault, the clothes he was wearing at the time, and blood samples. A search is currently underway to locate and apprehend his wife, Rakhi Manvatkar, who is also wanted in connection with the case.
The circulation of the assault video on social media platforms played a significant role in drawing public attention to the incident, prompting swift action from the authorities.
