Nagpur Constables Display Humanity Over Jurisdiction to Avert Tragedy

In a remarkable display of quick-thinking and compassionate policing, two constables from the Bajaj Nagar police station in Nagpur crossed jurisdictional lines to prevent a potential suicide attempt by a mother and her daughter at Ambazari Lake. The timely intervention by beat marshals Narendra Kewate and Pankaj Rathod averted what could have been a devastating tragedy stemming from family conflicts and financial difficulties.

Immediate Response to Distress Call

Constables Kewate and Rathod were performing their regular duties as beat marshals when they received an urgent call at approximately 10:50 AM on Friday. The alert concerned two unidentified women who were reportedly attempting to end their lives at Ambazari Lake. Despite the location falling under the jurisdiction of the Ambazari police station, the officers recognized the gravity of the situation and chose to act immediately.

Police personnel are typically required to operate only within their designated police station boundaries. However, assessing the critical nature of the emergency, Kewate and Rathod disregarded these bureaucratic constraints and rushed to the lake without hesitation.

On-Scene Intervention and Counseling

Upon arriving at Ambazari Lake, the constables discovered a 40-year-old mother and her 22-year-old daughter standing on the lake bank, visibly distressed and crying. Demonstrating exceptional presence of mind and effective counseling skills, the beat marshals engaged the women—residents of the Rameshwari area—in a calm and empathetic conversation.

They patiently listened to the duo's grievances, built trust with them, and successfully persuaded them to abandon their suicidal plans. The family had invested Rs 5 lakh in a nursing course for the younger woman, but she expressed a preference for working at a beauty parlour instead, explained a police officer. This disagreement had escalated into a serious rift within the family.

Ensuring Continued Support and Legal Procedures

After stabilizing the situation, the marshals contacted the women's relatives and summoned them to the location to provide immediate emotional support. Since the incident occurred within Ambazari police station's limits, Kewate and Rathod promptly informed the concerned police station and transferred the mother-daughter duo for further legal action and professional counseling.

Bajaj Nagar Senior Police Inspector Chetan Chauhan confirmed that the women were on the verge of taking their own lives. Our constables convinced them not to take such a drastic step, he stated, highlighting the officers' dedication to preserving human life above all else.

Recognition and Broader Implications

Chauhan further emphasized that this incident underscores the commitment of Nagpur police personnel who prioritize saving lives over adhering strictly to jurisdictional protocols. Zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Rishikesh Reddy also commended the swift response and humane approach demonstrated by Constables Kewate and Rathod.

This event serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role that law enforcement officers play in mental health crises and family disputes. It illustrates how proactive intervention, combined with empathy and effective communication, can prevent tragedies and foster community safety beyond administrative boundaries.
