In the quiet village of Khivtana in Nagaur district, Rajasthan, every phone ring now carries a heavy burden of hope and fear for the family of Dalip Singh. The 25-year-old sailor was working aboard an oil tanker that was struck in an attack off the coast of Oman earlier this month, amid the escalating tensions and conflicts in West Asia. Since the incident, his family has been plunged into a nightmare of uncertainty, desperately seeking information about his fate.
The Fateful Voyage and Devastating Attack
Dalip Singh left his village on January 23 to begin his maritime duties, embarking on what should have been a routine assignment. According to his cousin Devendra Singh, who spoke to media outlets, the young sailor joined the vessel on that same date. The normalcy of his journey was shattered on March 1 when the oil tanker was hit near Oman's Khasab Port. The strike caused significant damage to a section of the ship, creating chaos and destruction.
At the time of the attack, Dalip was positioned in the front section of the vessel alongside another crew member from Bihar. Tragically, while his colleague's body was recovered following the incident, Dalip Singh remains missing. There has been no verifiable information about his whereabouts, leaving his family in a state of suspended grief.
A Family's Desperate Search for Answers
The Singh family's last communication with Dalip occurred on February 28, just three days before the catastrophic event. "He told the family that his duty was going on normally and everything was fine," Devendra Singh recounted. The sudden news of the strike left them completely shattered, transforming their home into a center of mourning as relatives and neighbors gathered to offer support.
Dalip was not just a son but the primary breadwinner for his household. Unmarried and dedicated to his family, he supported his father who has been battling illness for nearly two decades. The emotional and financial void created by his disappearance has been overwhelming for the entire family.
"If he is indeed dead, as some reports suggest, then at least we should get his body so that the last rites can be performed as per our rituals," Devendra expressed with heartbreaking resignation. The family has made heartfelt appeals to elected representatives and authorities for assistance during these profoundly distressing times.
Political Intervention and Ongoing Search Efforts
Nagaur MP Hanuman Beniwal has stepped forward to support the family's cause. After receiving information about Dalip's situation, Beniwal sent a formal letter to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. In his communication, he demanded that the actual circumstances be ascertained from Omani authorities and that Dalip's family receive timely and accurate updates.
"I also spoke over the telephone with senior MEA officials regarding this matter," Beniwal confirmed in a social media post. The shipping company involved has reportedly informed the family that search efforts for Dalip are ongoing, though concrete results remain elusive.
The incident highlights the human cost of geopolitical conflicts, where ordinary workers like Dalip Singh become unintended casualties.
