A murder accused was shot in the leg by police after he allegedly attacked a head constable and attempted to escape during a crime scene reconstruction exercise on Hullahalli road, Malavalli taluk on Thursday.

Incident Details

The accused, Siddaraju, 33, is a rowdy-sheeter under Ramanagara police station limits and is among four arrested in connection with the murder of Mahesh, 34, of Bhimanahalli village. According to police, Mahesh was allegedly stabbed and assaulted with clubs following a dispute over messages sent to a woman.

As part of the investigation, the Kirugavalu police team took Siddaraju to the road near the Saibaba Temple close to D Halasahalli to recover the knife allegedly used in the murder, which was disposed of at the location after the crime.

After the weapon was recovered, police moved a short distance when Siddaraju reportedly requested to relieve himself. During this time, he allegedly picked up a broken beer bottle from the roadside and attacked head constable Prabhuswamy, who was escorting him.

Kirugavalu sub-inspector D Ravikumar initially fired a warning shot into the air and instructed the accused to surrender. However, when Siddaraju allegedly continued his attack and attempted to flee, the officer fired at his leg in self-defence and to prevent his escape.

Criminal Background

Police said Siddaraju has seven criminal cases registered against him, including four cases of attempt to murder and two kidnapping cases. Both Siddaraju and the injured constable were initially treated at a government hospital before being shifted to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences. Further investigation is underway.
