In a swift and timely intervention, the Mumbai Police saved the life of a woman who allegedly attempted to end her life by jumping into the sea at the iconic Marine Drive on Thursday afternoon. The woman, a resident of Malad, was successfully pulled from the waters, given initial aid, and rushed to a hospital where she is now reported to be out of danger.
Alert Passersby Trigger Swift Police Response
The incident unfolded in the afternoon when the police control room received a critical distress call. Alert passersby had spotted a woman entering the Arabian Sea near Garware Junction and immediately contacted the authorities, stating that urgent assistance was needed to pull her out. This crucial alert set the rescue operation in motion.
Acting on the information, the Marine Drive police station promptly dispatched its personnel. Police patrol vans numbered one and five were immediately directed to the spot. The team, including Constables Chavan and Kadam along with Police Sub-Inspector Tadvi from mobile van number 1, rushed to the location without delay.
The Rescue and Immediate Aftermath
The police team swiftly entered the water and managed to bring the distressed woman to safety. Following the rescue, she was initially taken to the nearby police station. However, as she had sustained an injury to her leg during the incident, she was subsequently rushed to GT Hospital for medical attention.
At the hospital, the woman was placed under medical observation. Senior police officials confirmed that she is now safe and her condition is stable. Women police personnel have been stationed with her, attempting to console her and gently ascertain the circumstances that led to such a drastic step. "She seems a little upset and is not providing details properly. The policewoman has been talking to her and trying to console her," stated a police officer involved in the case.
Ongoing Support and Investigation
The police have noted that the woman had come alone to south Mumbai earlier on the day of the incident. While her immediate physical safety has been secured, the focus has now shifted to providing her with psychological support and understanding the root cause of her distress. An IPS officer stated that she is under a doctor's observation while the police continue their sensitive dialogue with her.
This incident highlights the critical role of community vigilance and the efficiency of emergency response systems. The prompt action by concerned citizens in alerting the police, combined with the rapid deployment and bravery of the police team, averted a potential tragedy on Mumbai's famous coastline.
