Mumbai Police Deepen Probe into Tragic Ecstasy Deaths at Goregaon Music Concert
Police officials in Mumbai are intensifying their investigation into the heartbreaking deaths of two MBA students who consumed ecstasy pills at a music concert in Goregaon (East). Authorities have revealed that the duo likely ingested more than one pill each, leading to fatal consequences. While definitive forensic reports detailing the exact cause of death are still pending, investigators have consulted with medical teams who conducted preliminary examinations on the victims.
Details of the Tragic Incident and Ongoing Investigation
The victims, identified as a 28-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, were part of a larger group of 25 MBA students attending the concert at an exhibition ground on April 11. After consuming the ecstasy pills, both individuals tragically passed away the following day. A third student, a 25-year-old woman, also consumed the drug and fell critically ill but has since been discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home, according to police statements.
In a significant development, police have recorded statements from over 40 individuals, including numerous witnesses from within the student group that attended the event. On Tuesday, investigators summoned the sister of prime accused Ayush Sahitya to provide her statement. This move came after evidence surfaced showing that another accused, Vineet Gerelani, transferred money to her during the concert. Police are now actively searching for a major drug supplier with whom Sahitya was reportedly in contact, and an individual is currently being questioned in connection with this aspect of the case.
New Security Measures and Standard Operating Procedure
In response to this tragic incident, Mumbai police are preparing to implement a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for all large-scale events and shows. This new protocol will clearly define the responsibilities of each stakeholder involved in event organization and security. A police source disclosed that undercover officers in plain clothes will now be deployed inside venues, blending with the audience to monitor for any illegal activities, rather than being confined to traffic management duties outside.
"Organizers of events are already required to obtain official permission before hosting such gatherings, but the renewed focus will be on ensuring that alcohol and narcotics do not enter the venue premises," explained an official involved in the planning. This shift in strategy aims to prevent similar tragedies by enhancing on-site surveillance and enforcement capabilities.
Arrests and Security Lapses in the Goregaon Case
In the specific Goregaon case, authorities have arrested a bouncer named Pradeep Gupta for allegedly providing unauthorized entry to Gerelani and Sahitya into the music concert in exchange for bribes of Rs 1,000 each. Investigators discovered that the duo entered through a shuttered rear entrance that was not monitored by security cameras, highlighting a significant security lapse.
"As part of the new SOP, organizers will be mandated to ensure that only valid ticket holders gain access through authorized entry points. We are thoroughly investigating whether Gupta facilitated entry for other drug carriers through the same unmonitored rear entrance," stated an official familiar with the case details. This aspect of the probe underscores the critical need for comprehensive venue security and accountability measures to prevent unauthorized access and illicit activities at public events.
