Mumbai Police Officers Arrested in Bribery Case, Remanded to ACB Custody
In a significant development in Mumbai, two senior police officers attached to the Kurar police station have been arrested in connection with an alleged bribery case. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) took action against senior police inspector Sanjeev Tawde and police sub-inspector Dnyaneshwar Jutre, leading to their remand in ACB custody until February 23.
Details of the Arrest and Trap Operation
The ACB arrested the officers on Wednesday after a meticulously planned trap operation. According to reports, sub-inspector Dnyaneshwar Jutre was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh. This arrest followed a complaint filed by a 35-year-old individual, who claimed that inspector Sanjeev Tawde had demanded a bribe of Rs 3 lakh to avoid legal action in two separate cases.
The complainant stated that he had paid Rs 2 lakh initially, but later, on February 2, Jutre allegedly demanded the remaining Rs 1 lakh to settle the matters. The cases involved a financial fraud complaint against the complainant and a separate complaint by his transgender brother alleging sexual exploitation. After approaching the ACB on February 3, the bureau verified the complaint and set up a trap, leading to Jutre's apprehension during the bribe exchange.
Recovery of Evidence and Searches Conducted
During the operation, ACB officials conducted searches and recovered significant evidence, including Rs 6.3 lakh in cash and three mobile phones. Additionally, searches were carried out at the residences of both accused officers to gather further information and uncover any hidden assets or documents related to the case.
Custodial Interrogation Granted by Court
On Thursday, investigators presented their case before the ACB court, seeking custody of the two officers. They argued that custodial interrogation is crucial to probe the money trail, investigate prior payments, and uncover any alleged conspiracy involved in the bribery scheme. The court agreed with the request and granted ACB custody for Tawde and Jutre until February 23, allowing for a thorough investigation into the matter.
This incident highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to combat corruption within law enforcement agencies in Mumbai. The ACB's swift action and the court's decision to remand the officers underscore the seriousness with which such cases are being handled, aiming to ensure accountability and justice in the system.
