Mizoram Excise Department Seizes Over 500 Grams of Heroin in Dual Operations
In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Mizoram Excise & Narcotics Department conducted two successful operations on Wednesday night, resulting in the seizure of more than 500 grams of heroin and the arrest of five individuals. Department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga confirmed the details on Thursday, highlighting the coordinated efforts to combat narcotics in the region.
First Operation in Aizawl Leads to Major Haul
The initial operation took place in Aizawl, where the department's Anti Narcotics Squad collaborated with the Central Anti Drugs Squad (CADS) of the Young Mizo Association (YMA). Acting on intelligence, officials seized approximately 400 grams of heroin at Bawngkawn. This operation led to the arrest of three suspects: Lianzuali, aged 40, from North Vanlaiphai village in Serchhip district; Zohmingliana, aged 40; and Lalawmpuia, aged 36, both residents of Edenthar Veng locality. All three were charged under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and were produced before the Special Court (ND&PS Act) in Aizawl on Thursday.
Second Operation in Champhai District Targets Border Area
In a separate operation conducted in Champhai district, which borders Myanmar, excise and narcotics officials seized over 118 grams of heroin on Wednesday night. The seizure occurred at the Kawipui playground in Champhai town. Two women were arrested in connection with this case: Lalhmingmawii, aged 30, from Champhai Vengthlang locality, and PC Rohlupuii, aged 35, from Ngur village in Champhai District. Both were booked under the NDPS Act, 1985, and produced before the court of the district and sessions judge in Champhai on Thursday.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigations
The arrests underscore the Mizoram Excise & Narcotics Department's commitment to enforcing anti-drug laws. The individuals involved face serious charges under the NDPS Act, which carries stringent penalties for possession and trafficking of narcotics. Authorities are continuing their investigations to uncover potential networks and sources of the seized heroin, particularly given Champhai's proximity to Myanmar, a known hub for drug smuggling.
These operations reflect a broader effort to address drug-related issues in Mizoram, with officials emphasizing the importance of community involvement and inter-agency cooperation. The Young Mizo Association's role in the Aizawl operation highlights the collaborative approach being adopted to tackle narcotics trafficking effectively.
