The Maharashtra government has ushered in a new legal chief. The state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on Sunday approved the appointment of distinguished senior counsel Milind Sathe as the new Advocate General of Maharashtra.
A Seamless Transition of Legal Leadership
Sathe is set to take over the prestigious role immediately from the outgoing Advocate General, Birendra Saraf. Saraf recently submitted his resignation, which was accepted by the Chief Minister. However, the resignation was deferred until the end of December to ensure a smooth handover and allow time for appointing a successor. The formal notification from the Governor's office is anticipated within the next day or two.
The Profile of the New Advocate General
Milind Sathe is a legal luminary with a career spanning over four decades. He enrolled as an advocate in 1982 and has since built an formidable reputation. His credentials include serving as the President of the prestigious Bombay Bar Association from 2014 to 2021.
His practice before the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court has involved several landmark cases. Sathe has extensive experience in constitutional law, complex commercial disputes, and a wide array of public interest litigations (PILs). He has also acted as the special counsel for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in numerous matters. Notably, he is currently involved in the suo motu PIL concerning air pollution in Mumbai. The legal community often highlights his profound legal knowledge, practical approach, and characteristic calm demeanor.
Stepping into a Role of Honour and Duty
Upon confirmation of his appointment, Milind Sathe expressed his gratitude and commitment. He stated, "It is an honour to be the AG of Maharashtra, and I would do my best." His academic qualifications include a BSc and an LLB degree.
The outgoing Advocate General, Birendra Saraf, served the state for three years, a period marked by significant political and legal challenges. He successfully led the state's legal team through many sensitive battles in the High Court and Supreme Court. Saraf cited personal reasons for his decision to step down. The state cabinet formally acknowledged and thanked him for his diligent service. Reflecting on his tenure, Saraf described it as "an enriching experience."
