Historic Recruitment Drive Bolsters Meghalaya Police Force
In a landmark event for law enforcement in the state, Meghalaya witnessed one of its largest police inductions on record. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma personally handed over appointment letters to 2,968 new recruits of the 2nd Battalion during a ceremony held in Goeragre, located in the West Garo Hills district.
Comprehensive Recruitment Across Multiple Departments
The massive recruitment drive was designed to fill vacancies across a wide spectrum of technical and service-oriented positions within the Meghalaya Police department. The breakdown of appointments reveals a strategic allocation of resources:
- Armed Branch Constables and Associated Roles: 1,494 positions
- Unarmed Branch Constables: 720 posts
- Meghalaya Police Radio Organisation Operators: 205 recruits
- Firemen: 195 appointments
The remaining positions were distributed among specialized roles including UBSI (Unarmed Branch Sub-Inspector), driver fireman, driver constable, and various operator and mechanic posts, ensuring comprehensive coverage of operational needs.
Chief Minister Hails "Moment of Great Pride"
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed profound satisfaction with the recruitment achievement. "This must be the largest distribution of appointment letters that I have seen in the recent past — and perhaps even in the history of the state. Therefore, for us as a government, this is a moment of great pride," he stated emphatically.
The Chief Minister further elaborated on the scale of the recruitment exercise, revealing that authorities had processed an overwhelming 1.7 lakh applications for these positions. This massive response required extensive administrative efforts and meticulous screening processes to select the most qualified candidates.
Strengthening State Security Infrastructure
This unprecedented recruitment initiative represents a significant investment in Meghalaya's security infrastructure. By bolstering the police force with nearly 3,000 new personnel across diverse specializations, the state government aims to enhance law enforcement capabilities, improve response times, and strengthen community policing efforts throughout the region.
