Shillong: Meghalaya Police have arrested a 32-year-old man from Haryana in connection with the April 14 ATM break-in at Wapung village, where miscreants made off with Rs 9,57,900 using a gas cutter.
An FIR was registered with the Khliehriat Police Station under relevant sections of the BNS, and an investigation was launched. The accused has been identified as Irsad, alias Rumi, who was part of an active gang of criminals involved in breaking and looting ATMs in several districts of the state.
He was arrested by Meghalaya Police from Tauru in Haryana with the assistance of Haryana Police, the East Jaintia Hills district Superintendent of Police said. The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the case, as the gang had been operating across multiple regions.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify and apprehend other members of the gang. The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities near ATMs. This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of ATM-related crimes in the region, prompting law enforcement to enhance security measures.
