In a shocking and tragic incident that has sent ripples through a Meerut locality, an 18-year-old girl lost her life after being shot by a man who was allegedly stalking her. The assailant later took his own life in Baghpat on Thursday.
A Fatal Errand for Vegetables
The dreadful event unfolded around noon in Bawli village. The victim, identified as Tina Rani, had stepped out to a nearby shop to buy vegetables. Her father works as a watchman. As she went about this routine chore, she was intercepted by Satnam Singh, a 22-year-old man from the same neighbourhood who worked at a brick kiln in Punjab.
According to police accounts, Satnam Singh allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Tina Rani. The attack was fatal, and the young woman died on the spot, turning a simple daily task into a scene of horror.
Assailant's Suicide and Police Response
After committing the crime, Satnam Singh returned to his home in Baghpat. There, in a grim conclusion to the violence, he hanged himself from a tree behind his house. Alert locals informed the police about both incidents.
Officers from the Baraut police station promptly reached the locations. They took custody of both bodies and began their investigation into the double tragedy.
Police Cite One-Sided Relationship as Motive
Suraj Kumar Rai, the Superintendent of Police, provided initial insights into the possible motive. "Preliminary investigation suggests that the young man was in a one-sided relationship and shot the girl before taking his own life," SP Rai stated. He confirmed that a more detailed investigation into the matter is currently underway.
The case highlights the extreme and deadly consequences that can arise from stalking and unrequited obsession. It has left the communities of Bawli village and Baghpat in a state of mourning and shock, grappling with the sudden loss of two young lives.
