Mangaluru Police Chief Lauds Law and Order Situation, Details Transfer Strategy
In a significant review meeting held on Tuesday, the director general of police and inspector general of police, M A Saleem, declared that the law and order situation in Mangaluru city has been satisfactory over the past one year. Saleem commended the efforts of local police officials and emphasized the need to maintain this positive trajectory.
High-Level Review and Commendations
Following the meeting with senior officials from Mangaluru city and Dakshina Kannada police, Saleem specifically instructed Mangaluru city police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy and other officers to continue their diligent work. "I have instructed Mangaluru city police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy and other officials to continue their good work," Saleem stated, highlighting the collaborative efforts that have contributed to the city's peaceful environment.
Addressing Police Transfers and Staffing Challenges
The top police official also addressed ongoing confusion regarding transfers within the department. Saleem explained that a substantial number of police personnel from North Karnataka have been stationed in Mangaluru. To manage this, transfers are conducted in phases based on a government order that allows movement after 10 years of service.
"We have been giving them the opportunity for a transfer from one unit to another unit after 10 years of service as per a govt order. This is being done in phases so that the work here should not be affected and the vacancy should not be less than 50%. Keeping this in mind, we carry out the transfers," the DG&IGP elaborated, ensuring operational continuity.
Staffing Statistics and Welfare Considerations
Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy provided detailed insights into the staffing situation. He revealed that the sanctioned strength for civil police constables (CPC) is 801, but the current strength stands at 685, leaving 116 posts vacant, which accounts for 14.4% of the total.
Reddy further explained that 63 CPCs had requested transfers, but relieving them would increase vacancies to 22.1%. Since this exceeds the 15% threshold set by government orders, these requests were not approved. However, all assistant PCs who were transferred have been relieved, as there are no issues with their positions.
"The city is peaceful because they actually work hard in spite of all issues. They have also given up promotions to get inter-district transfers, and the pain of constables is real and we know it better than everyone. We have to look into their welfare also and at the same time we have to take care of the situation in the city also," Reddy emphasized, balancing personnel welfare with public safety.
Conclusion: A Balanced Approach to Policing
The review meeting underscored Mangaluru police's commitment to maintaining law and order while addressing internal challenges such as transfers and vacancies. Officials are focused on implementing phased transfer policies and managing staffing levels to ensure the city remains secure and peaceful, reflecting a holistic approach to policing in the region.
