Mangaluru Jail Inmates Create Ruckus, 4 Mobiles Recovered

A major disturbance erupted at the Mangaluru District Jail after inmates of two blocks violently protested against surprise inspections by officials. The situation required police intervention to bring it under control, leading to the recovery of four mobile phones and the identification of several inmates involved in the ruckus.

Surprise Inspections Spark Violent Protest

The incident began on the morning of December 15 when Sharanabasappa, the Superintendent of the District Jail in Mangaluru, conducted a surprise check in room number 4 of A block at 9.25 am. Officials stated that his official duty was obstructed during this inspection. A case regarding this obstruction was subsequently registered at the Barke police station.

Later the same day, around 9.30 am, another unannounced inspection was carried out in room number 4 of B block. Citing these inspections as the reason, inmates from both A and B blocks strongly objected. The tension escalated dramatically in the evening.

Police and Special Force Called to Control Situation

Around 5.50 pm, the protesting inmates began causing a severe disturbance. They were seen violently shaking the iron gates of their blocks, shouting loudly, and even attempting to break them. When the on-duty jail staff tried to confine the inmates to their respective blocks, the situation spiraled out of control.

Faced with the escalating ruckus, the jail authorities immediately alerted the police control room. Teams from the Mangaluru City Police and the Special Action Force, along with officers from the concerned police station, rushed to the jail premises. Their prompt action eventually brought the volatile situation under control.

Mobile Phones Recovered, Inmates Identified

Acting on specific intelligence regarding the use of unauthorized mobile phones within the jail, officials conducted targeted searches in certain cells during the operation. These searches yielded significant results:

  • Three mobile phones were recovered from room number 4 of A block.
  • One mobile phone was found during the search of room number 4 of B block.

After order was restored, authorities reviewed CCTV footage from the jail to identify the main perpetrators of the disturbance. The following inmates were found to be involved:

From A Block: Moyiddin Farad, Sarfaraz, Mohammed Altaf, Imtiyaz, Abdul Naujeed, Mohammed Sayil Akram, and Mohammed Haneef.

From B Block: Lathesh Jogi, Manjunath, Murugan, Sachin Talapadi, Tushar Ameen, Shabarish, Gururaj, and Sumanth.

The case registered at the Barke police station is progressing, with investigations ongoing into the full scope of the incident and the procurement of the recovered mobile phones.
