Andhra Man Held in Bikaner Trying to Cross Pak Border for 'Jail Love'
Man held in Bikaner trying to cross border for Pakistan jail love

Security forces in Rajasthan's Bikaner district have apprehended a man from Andhra Pradesh who was allegedly attempting to illegally cross the international border into Pakistan. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has taken a bizarre turn with the detainee claiming his motive was to reunite with a woman he purportedly fell in love with while he himself was imprisoned in Pakistan.

The Border Interception and Arrest

According to officials, Army Intelligence personnel acted on specific information about a man openly discussing his plans to travel to Pakistan and searching for an easy route across the heavily guarded frontier. The operation led to the detention of the individual near the 17 KYD area in Bikaner. He has been identified as Prashant Vedam, a resident of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

Khajuwala Station House Officer (SHO) Harpal Singh stated that Vedam had travelled all the way from coastal Visakhapatnam to the desert border in Rajasthan with the clear intent of crossing over. "He has been identified as Prashant Vedam, a resident of Andhra Pradesh, who had travelled all the way from Visakhapatnam to the India–Pakistan border in Bikaner," Singh confirmed. Investigators initially suspected he might have been attempting to return to Pakistan, a theory that gained strength as his past was uncovered.

A History of Border Violations and Incarceration

A preliminary probe revealed this was not Vedam's first attempt to enter Pakistan. In 2017, he had successfully crossed into Pakistan through the Karni Post in Bikaner. That venture led to his arrest by the Pakistan Army. He remained in their custody for approximately four years, until 2021, when he was repatriated to India via the Attari-Wagah border.

His decision to attempt the perilous journey again so soon after his release and repatriation immediately raised red flags for security agencies. The Army has expressed skepticism about his stated reasons, prompting a joint interrogation by the Army and other security agencies to uncover any potential ulterior motives or security threats.

The Unusual Claim and Family's Perspective

During initial questioning, Prashant Vedam presented an unusual explanation for his actions. He claimed that he had fallen in love with a woman who was incarcerated in a separate cell in the Pakistani jail where he was held. Vedam told police that he was attempting to cross the border to meet this woman, though it remains unclear if he maintained contact with her after his 2021 release.

"He is claiming that he fell in love with a woman in Pakistan who was in jail in another cell. Prashant has told the police that he was going back to Pakistan to meet her," SHO Harpal Singh told The Indian Express.

In a significant development, the police contacted Vedam's family in Visakhapatnam. His brother provided crucial context, informing authorities that Prashant is suffering from some mental health problems. The family, currently based in Hyderabad, is travelling to Bikaner and is expected to arrive by Monday evening. Authorities are awaiting their arrival to gain a clearer picture of Vedam's mental state and history.

The case underscores the continuous vigilance required along the India-Pakistan border and the complex, sometimes unexpected, human stories behind interception events. The joint interrogation aims to verify his extraordinary love story and rule out any espionage or other security-related dimensions before any legal proceedings are initiated.
