Mayiladuthurai Man Dies by Suicide After Violent Confrontations

A tragic incident unfolded in Mayiladuthurai on Thursday, resulting in the death of a 40-year-old man. The deceased, identified as K Anand from Arivalimangalam in Tiruvarur district, allegedly died by suicide hours after a series of violent events.

Violent Altercation at Ration Shop

The sequence of events began around 4:30 PM on January 14. Anand, a daily wager, visited a ration shop near Melamangainallur to purchase rice. During the transaction, he accidentally spilled some rice on the ground.

A 42-year-old watchman named Gnanasekaran picked up the spilled rice and returned it to Anand's bag. However, Anand accused Gnanasekaran of mixing mud with the rice. This accusation quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.

Anand verbally abused Gnanasekaran and then beat him with a wooden stick. He also issued death threats before leaving the spot while wielding a sickle. Gnanasekaran sustained injuries and was admitted as an inpatient at Mayiladuthurai General Hospital.

Police Intervention and Further Violence

Following a complaint about the assault, two police constables from Perambur police station arrived at the scene around 6:30 PM. First grade constable Saminathan and special branch constable Sathishkumar attempted to intervene.

At that time, Anand was threatening passersby with the sickle. The constables tried to disarm him, but Anand allegedly abused them and attacked them with a concealed bill hook.

He stabbed Saminathan in the right thumb and Sathishkumar in the abdomen. Both injured constables then went to Mayiladuthurai General Hospital for treatment. Based on their complaints, cases were registered against Anand at Perambur police station.

Suicide and Investigation

Learning that the police were actively searching for him, Anand allegedly took his own life around 2 AM. He hanged himself near his mother-in-law's house in Arivalimangalam. His wife, 26-year-old Gauthami, lodged a formal complaint about his death.

Mayiladuthurai Superintendent of Police G. Stalin visited the scene of the suicide. He directed officials to take appropriate measures regarding the case.

Anand's body was sent for postmortem examination at Tiruvarur Government Medical College Hospital. After the procedure, it was handed over to his family members. Police authorities have confirmed that an investigation into the entire incident is currently in progress.
