Tragic Death on Mumbai Suburban Rail: Man Falls from Overcrowded Train
A 36-year-old resident of Diva, identified as Tejas Pawar, tragically lost his life after falling from a packed moving train on Thursday. The incident occurred shortly after he boarded the train at Kopar station in Dombivli while en route to attend the funeral of a relative in Dadar.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to the Thane Government Railway Police (GRP), Pawar and a relative initially attempted to board a Mumbai-bound train at Diva station. However, due to severe overcrowding on all trains heading towards Mumbai, they decided to change their strategy. The pair opted to travel in the opposite direction and boarded a train at Kopar station instead.
Senior Inspector Archana Dusane of Thane GRP provided further insight into the sequence of events. "While his relative successfully managed to get inside the train compartment, Pawar is suspected to have been standing on the footboard due to the extreme crowding," she stated. "He likely lost his grip and fell while the train was approaching Diva station."
Pawar was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital following the fall, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. In a heartbreaking twist, his relative, who was unaware of the tragedy, continued the journey all the way to Dadar, only learning of the incident later.

This tragic accident has once again brought to the forefront the critical issue of overcrowding on Mumbai's suburban railway network. Activist Rajesh Ghanghav from the Kalyan-Karjat-Kasara Railway Passenger Association emphasized the urgent need for improved services. "This incident underscores the desperate need for additional train services on the Thane suburban sector to alleviate dangerous crowding conditions," Ghanghav asserted.
The Mumbai suburban rail system, one of the busiest in the world, frequently operates beyond capacity during peak hours, leading to hazardous situations for commuters. Passengers often resort to traveling on footboards, clinging to doors, or even riding on train roofs, significantly increasing the risk of accidents.
