A 28-year-old man from Tamil Nadu's Namakkal district found himself behind bars this weekend after he took to social media to issue a death threat against a police officer. The incident, which unfolded over Friday and Saturday, highlights the serious legal consequences of threatening public servants online.
Confrontation During Traffic Check Leads to Threats
The chain of events began on Friday when Sub-Inspector Chandrasekar from Erode Town Police was conducting routine vehicle checks. The police team stopped V Raja, a resident of the Kaveri RS area near Pallipalayam, who was reportedly speeding on a two-wheeler near Krishna Theatre.
Upon checking, the officers found Raja to be under the influence of alcohol. This led to a heated verbal argument between Raja and SI Chandrasekar. Acting on the violation, the patrol team seized Raja's two-wheeler, imposed a fine for drunk driving, and then released him.
Social Media Post Triggers Legal Action
Not content with the legal penalty, Raja later turned to social media to vent his anger. He posted messages on his handles specifically threatening to kill Sub-Inspector Chandrasekar. The posts were not taken lightly by the police department.
Upon learning of the threats, SI Chandrasekar formally lodged a complaint with the Pallipalayam police. Based on this complaint, the police swiftly identified and located Raja.
Arrest and Multiple Charges
On Saturday, the Pallipalayam police arrested V Raja. Investigations revealed that Raja is an ardent supporter of former DMK minister Senthil Balaji and was allegedly involved in certain illegal activities.
The police have booked him under multiple serious sections of the law. The charges against him include:
- Threatening to kill a police officer.
- Using obscene language in a public forum.
- Preventing a government servant from performing his official duty.
After his arrest, Raja was produced before the Kumarapalayam sub-court. The court ordered judicial custody, and he was subsequently lodged in the Namakkal jail. The case serves as a stern reminder that threats against public officials, especially made on public platforms like social media, are met with strict legal action.
