Police in Outer North Delhi have arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly stealing a cab at knifepoint after posing as a passenger. The brazen robbery occurred near a petrol pump in the Bawana area, sending shockwaves through the local driver community.
How the Cab Robbery Unfolded
The incident was reported on Tuesday when a cab driver hailing from Tikri Border approached the Bawana police station. The driver informed authorities that he was operating in Rohini when he received a booking for a trip to Sonipat around 10:30 pm. He picked up the passenger from the vicinity of Mahadev Chowk.
As the journey progressed, the passenger requested a stop near a petrol pump in Bawana's Sector-3 around 11 pm, citing a need to relieve himself. Both the driver and the passenger exited the vehicle. It was during this moment that the passenger, in a sudden move, snatched the car keys from the driver's hand, pushed him to the ground, and sped away with the vehicle.
Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest
Following the driver's complaint, a case was promptly registered under Section 309 (robbery) of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Bawana police station. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami stated that investigators used a combination of technical surveillance and manual intelligence to track down the suspect.
The accused was identified as Aman, a resident of Ashok Vihar in Sonipat. Acting on the gathered evidence, police teams located and arrested Aman. The stolen car was successfully recovered from his possession, marking a quick resolution to the case.
Conclusion and Community Impact
This arrest highlights the effectiveness of police response to street crimes in the national capital's outer areas. The use of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in this robbery case is also notable. For cab drivers, especially those working night shifts, the incident serves as a cautionary tale about remaining vigilant with passengers, even during routine stops.
