Man Arrested for Double Murder of Stepmother and Stepbrother in Varanasi Property Dispute
Police arrested a man in Varanasi on Tuesday for allegedly murdering his stepmother and stepbrother with a sharp-edged weapon. The accused, identified as Rahul Gupta, faces charges for the double murder in a shocking case that has gripped the local community.
Bodies Recovered After Attempted Disposal
Early Tuesday morning, locals at Manihan market alerted police after noticing Rahul Gupta trying to load a body onto a tractor-trolley. When officers questioned him, he confessed to the murders and revealed he was taking the bodies to dispose of them in a nearby canal.
Police recovered both bodies and seized the tractor-trolley used in the crime. They also confiscated the sharp-edged weapon believed to be the murder weapon. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Property Dispute Suspected as Motive
During interrogation, Rahul Gupta confessed that a long-standing property dispute drove him to commit the murders. He had been in conflict with his stepmother, Usha Gupta (62), and her son, Ayush Gupta (32), over parental property for several years.
The dispute escalated early Tuesday morning when they quarreled violently. In a fit of rage, Rahul attacked both victims with the sharp weapon, killing them on the spot at their home in Patehara village under Manihan police station in Mirzapur district.
Chaotic Attempt to Hide Evidence
The accused's attempt to dispose of the bodies unfolded chaotically. While transporting the bodies on the tractor-trolley through Manihan market, Ayush's body fell off the vehicle near a crossing. Rahul continued to the canal and dumped Usha's body there.
When he returned to retrieve Ayush's body from the market, locals spotted him and alerted authorities. Rahul fled the scene and reached his home, where police apprehended him shortly afterward.
Police Investigation and Recovery
Based on Rahul's confession, police immediately launched a search operation. They reached the canal and engaged divers to locate Usha's body. The divers found her body floating near Hasra village, approximately 3.5 kilometers away from Patewar village.
Mirzapur ASP (operations) Manish Kumar Mishra confirmed the arrest and seizure of evidence. He stated that the Manihan police acted swiftly on the tip from locals, leading to the quick resolution of this tragic case.
The investigation continues as police gather more details about the property dispute and the events leading up to the violent confrontation. Authorities are examining all aspects of the case to ensure justice for the victims.
