Kolkata Man Arrested for Violent Assault on Elderly Couple in Bus

A shocking incident of violence unfolded on a crowded bus in Kolkata's Behala area, leading to the arrest of a 25-year-old man. The altercation, which erupted over a seat reserved for senior citizens, resulted in the assault of an elderly couple, causing injuries that required hospital treatment.

Details of the Bus Altercation and Assault

The incident occurred around 9:30 PM on Monday aboard a bus traveling on route 18A from Howrah to Greenfield City. As the bus proceeded along Diamond Harbour Road, less than a kilometer from Taratala, a dispute broke out between passengers. The conflict intensified near Pathakpara, close to Behala Police Station, escalating into physical violence.

According to police reports, the elderly couple, identified as Chittaranjan Naskar (64) and his wife Durga Mondal, were allegedly attacked by fellow passenger Dhurba Sinha. The argument began when Sinha contested the use of a seat reserved for senior citizens, leading to a heated exchange that quickly turned violent.

Violent Attack Leaves Elderly Couple Injured

Police stated that Sinha allegedly punched Durga Mondal on the forehead, causing her to lose consciousness briefly. When Chittaranjan Naskar protested the assault on his wife, he too was physically attacked. Both victims suffered bleeding injuries, which authorities believe were caused by rings worn by the accused during the assault.

Following the violent episode, passengers on the bus raised an alarm, prompting the driver to stop the vehicle. The injured couple was immediately taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital for medical attention. After receiving treatment, both were discharged from the hospital, according to Deputy Commissioner (Behala-SW) Rahul De.

Police Action and Legal Proceedings

Based on a formal complaint filed by Chittaranjan Naskar, Behala police swiftly arrested Dhurba Sinha in connection with the assault. Authorities registered a case against him for the violent attack on the elderly couple.

The legal process moved forward when Sinha appeared before a local court on Tuesday. The court granted him conditional bail, allowing his release under specific terms while the investigation continues. Police are gathering evidence and witness statements to build a strong case against the accused.

Community Response and Safety Concerns

This incident has raised concerns about passenger safety on public transportation, particularly regarding the protection of senior citizens. The violent nature of the assault over a simple seat dispute has shocked the local community in Behala and surrounding areas.

Authorities emphasize the importance of respecting designated seats for elderly and differently-abled passengers on public transport. The case serves as a reminder of the need for increased vigilance and prompt action against those who violate public safety norms.
