Tragic Drowning in Girna River Claims Two Lives During Rescue Attempt
A devastating incident unfolded in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the tragic drowning of a 27-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl in the Girna river. The victims lost their lives during a heroic rescue attempt after village children playing in the water strayed into dangerous currents and began struggling to stay afloat.
Details of the Tragic Incident
According to Inspector Mahesh Sharma of the Bhadgaon police station, the tragedy occurred when a group of children from Bhadgaon village were playing in the river to escape the summer heat. Some of the children ventured too deep into the water and found themselves caught in strong currents, prompting immediate alarm from people on the riverbanks.
Nadeem Pathan, a 27-year-old resident of Bhadgaon who was nearby, witnessed the children being pulled by the current and immediately jumped into the river to help. "He managed to save two 12-year-old children and brought them safely to the shore," Inspector Sharma explained. "However, another girl, identified as 16-year-old Fatiha Sharif Pinjari, was being swept away by the current."
The Fatal Rescue Attempt
Exhausted from his initial rescue efforts, Nadeem reached Fatiha but had little strength remaining. The panicking girl clung to him desperately, causing both individuals to drown in the river's strong currents. The police and fire brigade were immediately called to the scene, initiating a challenging search operation that lasted nearly four hours.
The bodies of both victims were finally recovered from the river around 4 PM on Sunday. Inspector Sharma provided additional context about Nadeem Pathan, noting that he took up temporary jobs to earn his livelihood. "With rising temperatures, many children frequent the river during summer months," the officer added, highlighting the seasonal danger.
Police Investigation and Response
The Bhadgaon police have registered a case of accidental death and are conducting further inquiries into the incident. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by rivers during summer months, particularly when children play unsupervised in water bodies with unpredictable currents.
The community has been left in shock by the loss of two lives in what began as a routine summer day. The incident underscores the importance of water safety awareness and supervision, especially in rural areas where children often seek relief from heat in natural water sources.
