Major Fire Erupts at Pune Industrial Unit, Neighboring Mall Damaged
A significant fire incident occurred at a company located in the Trimurti Lawns area on Lohegaon-Wagholi road in Pune on Wednesday afternoon. The blaze, which started around 1 PM, led to substantial property damage but, fortunately, resulted in no loss of life. According to an official statement from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), all employees of the affected company and individuals from nearby areas were safely evacuated immediately after the flames erupted.
Rapid Response and Firefighting Efforts
The fire brigade department of PMRDA swiftly mobilized resources to combat the inferno, deploying a total of seven fire engines to bring the situation under control. The initial response included two engines from the Wagholi fire station, which arrived at the scene within minutes. Due to the severity and intensity of the fire, five additional engines from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) were called in to assist. Firefighters employed a combination of water and foam sprays to extinguish the flames effectively.
Devendra Potphode, Chief Fire Officer of PMRDA, highlighted the challenges faced during the operation. "Our team immediately rushed to the spot as soon as we received information about the fire. The blaze was spreading rapidly due to oil and flammable materials; however, timely intervention saved the neighbouring settlements and averted major damage," he stated.
Causes and Consequences of the Blaze
The fire's intensity was exacerbated by the presence of a large quantity of oil, grease, and other highly flammable materials stored on the company premises. This not only fueled the fire but also caused it to spread to a neighboring furniture mall, where it ignited furniture and two gas cylinders, significantly increasing the risk to the surrounding vicinity.
As of Wednesday night, the fire department had not yet determined the exact cause of the blaze. The incident has resulted in considerable financial losses, prompting a joint investigation by the police and fire department to ascertain the factors leading to the fire and to prevent future occurrences.
