Madras High Court Directs State Government to Report on Nanguneri Sickle Attack Case
In a significant development, the Madras High Court has taken cognizance of a plea seeking suo motu proceedings regarding the brutal sickle attack in Nanguneri, Tirunelveli district. A division bench comprising Justice N Sathish Kumar and Justice M Jothiraman has directed the Tamil Nadu state government to provide detailed instructions on the matter, following a mention made by an advocate on Friday.
Advocate Highlights Lack of Relief for Victim's Family
Advocate Aayiram K Selvakumar, in a letter addressed to the registrar judicial of the Madurai bench, brought to the court's attention the distressing situation faced by the family of one of the deceased victims. He pointed out that the government has, as of now, failed to extend any financial assistance or relief to the family of Trinath Kata, a guest worker from Odisha who was tragically killed in the attack.
The advocate urged the court to consider initiating a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) to ensure necessary relief is granted to the bereaved family. He emphasized that the victim was murdered without any provocation, leaving his family in a state of profound hardship and financial distress.
Details of the Nanguneri Sickle Attack Incident
The incident, which has shocked the local community, occurred on the night of March 2. A gang launched an unprovoked assault using sickles on individuals who were standing outside a tea shop in Perumpathu village. This violent attack resulted in the deaths of two people and left five others injured.
- Trinath Kata: A guest worker hailing from Odisha, who lost his life in the attack.
- John: A differently-abled man belonging to the Scheduled Caste community, who also succumbed to his injuries.
In response to the incident, the Nanguneri police acted swiftly, registering a case and arresting seven individuals the very next day. However, the legal proceedings and support for the victims' families have now come under judicial scrutiny.
