Major Drug Bust in Ludhiana: Police Seize 60kg of Poppy Husk

In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Khanna police in Ludhiana have successfully apprehended two drug peddlers following the seizure of a substantial quantity of poppy husk. The operation, which unfolded in the Malaud area, marks a critical victory in the ongoing battle against drug-related crimes in the region.

Interception and Arrest of Key Suspects

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Darpan Ahluwalia, the breakthrough occurred on April 20 when a vigilant police patrolling team intercepted a suspicious vehicle in Ber Khurd village. The car was being driven by Harmanpreet Singh Dhaliwal, a resident of the local area. Upon conducting a thorough search of the automobile, officers discovered two large plastic bags containing the illicit substance, totaling 60 kilograms of poppy husk, concealed on the rear seat.

During subsequent interrogation, Dhaliwal revealed the involvement of an accomplice, Navjot Singh, who hails from Lopon village. Acting swiftly on this crucial information, the police launched a manhunt and successfully arrested Navjot Singh on Tuesday, thereby dismantling a key link in the drug distribution network.

Criminal Histories and Ongoing Investigation

Both individuals taken into custody have established criminal records, underscoring their deep involvement in illegal activities. Harmanpreet Singh Dhaliwal is reportedly facing three prior cases related to drug and liquor smuggling, indicating a pattern of engagement in contraband trade. Similarly, Navjot Singh is an accused in one drug-related case, further highlighting the persistent threat posed by such offenders to community safety.

The investigating officers are currently conducting intensive questioning of the duo to uncover critical details about the source of the consignment and the intended recipients. This line of inquiry aims to trace the supply chain and identify other potential members of the drug syndicate, with the goal of preventing future smuggling attempts and ensuring comprehensive legal action.

Implications for Drug Enforcement in Punjab

This seizure of 60kg of poppy husk represents a major blow to drug peddling operations in the Khanna region of Ludhiana. Poppy husk, a derivative of the opium poppy plant, is commonly abused as a narcotic substance, and its illegal trade contributes to widespread addiction and social issues. The arrest of these two peddlers, coupled with the confiscation of such a large quantity, is expected to disrupt local drug markets and serve as a deterrent to other traffickers.

The police have emphasized their commitment to maintaining rigorous surveillance and patrolling to combat drug-related crimes effectively. This incident underscores the importance of community vigilance and law enforcement collaboration in safeguarding public health and order.
