Ludhiana Court Imposes Five-Year Sentence for Violent Snatching Incident

A local court in Ludhiana has delivered a stern verdict, sentencing a man to five years of rigorous imprisonment for his involvement in a violent snatching and assault case. The court of additional sessions judge Preeti Sukhija also levied a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict, identified as Sandeep Shukla, a resident of Sunder Nagar.

Failure to pay this fine will result in an additional three-month jail term, underscoring the court's firm stance against such criminal activities.

Details of the 2019 Assault and Snatching Case

The case traces back to May 1, 2019, when complainant Rama Shankar reported a harrowing incident to the police. According to his statement, while he was managing his egg cart in New Sunder Nagar, Shukla, accompanied by 20 to 25 masked accomplices, launched a brutal attack.

The assailants assaulted Shankar with sticks, causing him to fall, after which they continued the violence with fists and kicks. In a further act of aggression, Shukla snatched Rs 1,200 from Shankar's hand before fleeing the scene, not without issuing threats to kill him.

Police intervention led to Shukla's subsequent arrest and the recovery of the stolen cash. Investigations revealed that Shukla was reportedly armed with a country-made pistol during the crime, adding a layer of severity to the offense.

Motive and Trial Proceedings

The motive behind the attack was linked to a prior altercation on April 30, 2019, when the group had allegedly abused the complainant at his residence. This history provided context to the violent outburst the following day.

During the trial, the defense argued for false implication, claiming Shukla was wrongly accused. However, they failed to substantiate this plea with evidence or demonstrate any existing enmity between the accused and either the police or the complainant.

The court critically observed, "The defense version cannot be considered gospel truth without evidence," emphasizing that the established timeline of events effectively negated any possibility of a setup.

Court's Rationale and Final Judgment

Addressing the defense's contention regarding the absence of independent witnesses in the investigation, the court maintained that the testimony of official witnesses holds equal credibility to that of private individuals, unless proven otherwise.

After thorough examination, the court found the prosecution's evidence to be consistent and compelling. Consequently, Shukla was convicted under charges of snatching and criminal intimidation, leading to the pronounced sentence of five years of rigorous imprisonment.

This ruling highlights the judiciary's commitment to upholding law and order, particularly in cases involving violent crimes and public safety concerns in urban areas like Ludhiana.
