Ludhiana: A visitor's suspicious behavior on Tuesday exposed a clumsy attempt to deliver a special white-powder package to two accused drug dealers inside the high-security local Central Jail. The substance was confirmed to be a narcotic.
Interception at Entry Screening
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and prison guards intercepted the suspect, Sukhchain Singh, during routine entry screening before a scheduled meeting with undertrial prisoners Baljinder Singh and Harpreet Singh. Both inmates are detained on separate charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Guards searched Sukhchain after noticing suspicious behavior during frisking and found 8 grams of a white powder on his person. A preliminary field test using a drug detection kit confirmed the substance was a narcotic.
Police Investigation and Charges
Assistant Superintendent of Police Jaswinder Singh said investigating officers believe the contraband was intended for delivery inside the prison. Division Number 7 police have registered a fresh case against Sukhchain and both inmates under the NDPS Act and the Prisons Act.
The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in correctional facilities and the vigilance of prison staff in preventing contraband from reaching inmates. Further investigation is underway to determine the source of the narcotic and any potential links to larger drug networks.
