Vigilant security personnel at Ludhiana's Central Jail successfully intercepted a smuggling attempt, uncovering a stash of tobacco cleverly concealed within an inmate's footwear. The discovery was made during a standard security procedure following a visitation session, highlighting the ongoing challenges prison authorities face in keeping contraband out.
Routine Check Uncovers Hidden Contraband
The incident unfolded after Manmeet Singh, a resident of Guru Nanak Nagar in Machhiwara, completed a "mulakaat" or meeting with a visitor. As per protocol, staff conducted a detailed frisking while processing him back into the general prison population. Their thorough search paid off when they found 70 grams of tobacco hidden inside the soles or lining of his shoes.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
Following the discovery, Assistant Superintendent Vijay Kumar filed a formal complaint with the police. Subsequently, the Division Number 7 police have registered a case against Manmeet Singh. He has been booked under Sections 42 and 45 of the Prisons Act, which specifically deal with the illegal introduction of prohibited materials into jail premises.
Head Constable Gurpreet Singh, the investigating officer on the case, confirmed that an inquiry is now underway. The primary focus of the investigation is to identify the individual who allegedly passed the tobacco to the inmate during the visitation period.
