Ludhiana Court Delivers 12-Year Sentence in Major Drug Possession Case
A special court in Ludhiana has handed down a significant sentence in a drug trafficking case, underscoring the judicial system's firm stance against narcotics offenses. The court sentenced a convicted drug peddler to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for the possession of a large quantity of intoxicant capsules.
Details of the Sentencing and Fine
Judge Harvinder Singh of the special court imposed the sentence along with a fine of Rs.1 lakh on the convict. In a stern warning, the judge ruled that failure to pay this fine would result in an additional one year of rigorous imprisonment. This dual penalty highlights the severity with which the court views such crimes, aiming to deter future offenses through both incarceration and financial consequences.
Background of the Case and Police Action
The case dates back to April 5, 2019, when the Sadar Khanna police registered a case under the NDPS Act against two individuals: 42-year-old Munish Kumar and 32-year-old Surinder Singh, both residents of Haibowal Kalan in Ludhiana. The charges stemmed from their possession of 9,440 intoxicant capsules, a substantial haul that raised alarms about drug peddling activities in the area.
According to the prosecution, the incident unfolded during a routine patrol. Sub-Inspector Bakshish Singh and other police officials were traveling from Bhadla village to Khanna for patrolling and checking suspected persons. Upon reaching the area under the overbridge on GT Road in Alaur, they spotted two individuals holding a bag. Seeing the police, the duo threw the bag and attempted to flee, but were quickly apprehended on suspicion.
The bag, when inspected, was found to contain intoxicant capsules that had scattered on the ground. This discovery led to the immediate arrest of the accused. Following a thorough investigation, the police filed a chargesheet in court, presenting evidence to support the charges under the NDPS Act.
Case Developments and Outcome
During the legal proceedings, a tragic turn occurred when accused Munish Kumar passed away. Upon receipt of his death report, the court abated the proceedings against him, focusing the case solely on Surinder Singh. The surviving accused faced the full brunt of the law, resulting in the recent sentencing.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Punjab and beyond. The rigorous imprisonment term and hefty fine reflect the judiciary's commitment to curbing the narcotics trade, which poses significant risks to public health and safety. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of vigilance and strict enforcement to combat such illicit activities effectively.
