Ludhiana: Dog causes crash on Southern Bypass, 1 hurt

An early morning drive turned into a nightmare on Ludhiana's Southern Bypass when a speeding vehicle crashed violently to avoid hitting a stray animal. The incident, which resulted in significant damage and injuries, has once again highlighted the perils posed by stray animals on city roads.

Dramatic Collision to Save a Stray Dog

The accident occurred in the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday near the busy BRS Nagar Chowk. According to police, the driver of a mid-size Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) was forced to make a sudden evasive manoeuvre when a stray dog darted onto the road directly in the car's path. The time was approximately 5:30 am.

In his statement to the authorities, the driver explained that he swerved to prevent hitting the dog. This abrupt action, however, caused him to lose control of the vehicle. The MPV then veered off its path and slammed into the metal railing lining the roadside, causing serious damage to the front section of the car.

Injuries and Police Investigation

The car was not being driven by its owner at the time of the crash. Police identified the occupants as a friend and a nephew of the vehicle's owner, who is a well-known toy trader based in Ludhiana. The friend was behind the wheel when the incident unfolded.

Sub-inspector Aditya Sharma, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Sarabha Nagar police station, confirmed the sequence of events. "While saving the dog, the car occupant lost control over the vehicle and crashed into the railing on the roadside," stated SHO Sharma.

The impact of the collision resulted in injuries to the owner's nephew, who was a passenger in the vehicle. Police officials have confirmed that the injured individual received medical attention and is now reported to be out of danger. Fortunately, no other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in this single-vehicle mishap.

Recurring Issue of Stray Animals on Roads

This accident underscores a persistent and dangerous problem faced by motorists in many Indian cities, including Ludhiana. Stray animals on thoroughfares present a constant hazard, often leading to sudden braking or swerving that can cause serious accidents.

While the driver's instinct to avoid harming the animal is understandable, such incidents frequently result in significant human injury and property damage. The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter further, but have clarified that no other parties were involved.

The early morning timing of the crash likely prevented a more severe tragedy, as the Southern Bypass, which often carries heavy traffic, was relatively less crowded. Authorities continue to urge drivers to maintain safe speeds, especially on bypass roads and in areas known for stray animal movement.
