A Pune court on Friday remanded Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary, the two accused in the murder of a 24-year-old woman at Lohagad Fort, to judicial custody until July 16. The court rejected the prosecution's plea seeking an extension of police custody for further investigation.
Court Rejects Police Custody Extension
During the hearing, the prosecution argued that additional time in police custody was necessary to recover the victim's mobile phone and other evidence. However, the defense countered that the accused had already been in police custody for the maximum permissible period and that further detention was unwarranted. After hearing both sides, the court dismissed the prosecution's request and ordered judicial custody.
Details of the Case
The victim, a 24-year-old woman from Pune, was found dead at Lohagad Fort on June 28. The police arrested Goyal and Chaudhary on June 30 on charges of murder. According to the police, the accused had allegedly pushed the victim off a cliff after a dispute. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities collecting forensic evidence and recording statements from witnesses.
Legal Proceedings
The accused were produced before the court on Friday, where the judge also directed the jail authorities to provide them with adequate medical facilities. The next hearing is scheduled for July 16. The police have not yet filed a chargesheet, and further investigation is expected to continue under judicial supervision.
