A court in Odisha has delivered a stern verdict in a shocking case of violence against a child, sentencing a 25-year-old man to rigorous imprisonment for life for the brutal killing of an 11-year-old boy.

The Court's Verdict and Punishment

On Tuesday, the court of additional district & sessions judge, Padampur, pronounced Rastra Barik, son of Hemanta Barik from Kendmundi village, guilty of the horrific crime. Judge Surya Narayan Dwivedy not only handed down the life sentence but also directed the convict to pay a fine of Rs 25,000. The court ruled that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.

Details of the Heinous Crime

The tragic incident dates back to June 26, 2022, around 9 am. According to the case records presented in court, the young victim was playing on a village road in Kendmundi when the accused, Rastra Barik, assaulted him. The attack involved thrashing the child, which caused grievous injuries. Despite immediate efforts to save his life, the boy succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to Vimsar, Burla for treatment.

Robust Trial and Conclusive Evidence

The prosecution built a strong case to secure the conviction. During the trial, the court examined a total of 26 witnesses. The evidence presented was substantial, including 18 documents and four material objects. After a thorough evaluation of all the evidence and testimonies, Judge Dwivedy found the evidence conclusive and termed the act a heinous crime, leading to the maximum punishment under the law.

This verdict underscores the judicial system's firm stance on crimes against children and brings a measure of justice for the victim's family after a prolonged legal process.
