Ooty Mahila Court Delivers Life Sentence for Heinous Crimes Against Tribal Students

In a landmark verdict, the Ooty mahila court on Friday imposed a sentence of life imprisonment until death upon a 27-year-old youth for the brutal rape and sexual harassment of tribal girl students. The convict, identified as Umeshwaran from Coonoor, was found guilty of preying on vulnerable minors in a case that has shocked the local community.

Details of the Crime and Conviction

According to court sources, Umeshwaran operated a small petty shop in a village near his hometown. This establishment became a frequent stop for a group of tribal girl students from the area, who visited to purchase chocolates, confectionery, and recharge their mobile phones. Exploiting this routine, Umeshwaran approached the girls with malicious intent.

The investigation revealed that he befriended four Class X girl students and one Class VIII girl student. Over time, he lured them to his residence on multiple occasions under false pretenses. During these visits, he raped two of the victims and subjected the remaining three to repeated sexual harassment. To manipulate the girls further, Umeshwaran deceitfully promised to marry them soon, while simultaneously concealing his relationships with other individuals.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The case came to light in May 2025 after child welfare protection committee officials, acting on a tip from local residents, visited the village and filed a complaint with the Coonoor all-women police. Authorities promptly registered a case against Umeshwaran, who was a former member of the Tamil Nadu Home Guard and had served as an anti-poaching watcher. He was arrested and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.

The trial was conducted before the Ooty mahila court, where Judge M Senthil Kumar presided. In addition to the life sentence, the court directed the state government to provide compensation of Rs 2 lakhs each to the victims of sexual assault. This financial support aims to aid in their recovery and rehabilitation following the traumatic ordeal.

Broader Implications and Community Response

This verdict underscores the judiciary's commitment to delivering justice for crimes against women and children, particularly in cases involving marginalized communities. The sentencing sends a strong message about the severe consequences of such predatory behavior and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable populations.

Local authorities have emphasized the role of community vigilance in uncovering the crimes, highlighting how tips from residents were instrumental in initiating the investigation. The case has also sparked discussions on enhancing protective measures for students in rural and tribal areas to prevent similar incidents in the future.
