Vadodara Children's Court Imposes Life Sentence for 2018 School Murder
In a significant ruling, the children's court in Vadodara has sentenced a 24-year-old man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a 14-year-old schoolmate in 2018. The convict, who was 16 years old at the time of the crime, stabbed Dev Tadvi to death at Shri Bharti School in Baranpura.
Details of the Gruesome Crime
The prosecution presented evidence that the killing was premeditated. The convict carried a knife and chilli powder to school with the intent to commit the act. In June 2018, the body of Dev Tadvi, a Class 9 student who had joined the school only a few days earlier, was discovered in the school washroom.
The investigation revealed that the convict stabbed Tadvi ten times, resulting in his death. Following the murder, the convict fled to his aunt's house in the city, where he changed his clothes. When his father learned about the incident, he took his son to Valsad, where police apprehended the 16-year-old.
Legal Proceedings and Psychological Assessment
Advocate and government pleader P C Patel, who represented the complainant, stated, "Doctors questioned the accused and conducted psychological tests. Their assessment concluded that his mind functioned like that of an adult, and he could fully understand the consequences of his actions. Consequently, he was tried in the children's court."
The Wadi police had registered a murder case and detained the minor convict. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict in addition to the life sentence.
Motivation and Impact
During police interrogation, the convict claimed he had no personal enmity with Tadvi. Instead, he expressed anger towards a teacher who had reprimanded him about his homework and stated he wanted to take revenge on the school. The shocking murder occurred while hundreds of students were present on the school premises, causing widespread alarm and distress within the educational community.
This case highlights the severe consequences of juvenile crime when psychological evaluations indicate adult-like comprehension and premeditation.
