Kolkata Police Launches Major CCTV Surveillance Project in Key Areas

In a significant move to bolster public safety, the Kolkata Police has announced the installation of 116 new CCTV cameras across the Kalighat and Lake areas of the city. This comprehensive surveillance upgrade, with a total budget of Rs 29 lakh, is specifically designed to protect morning walkers, pilgrims, and local residents from potential threats.

Strategic Deployment and Financial Allocation

The project involves a detailed allocation of resources: the Lake area will receive 96 CCTV cameras at a cost of Rs 24 lakh, while Kalighat will be equipped with 20 cameras costing Rs 5 lakh. This initiative was set into motion following a directive from the top brass at Lalbazar, who ordered the completion of a thorough security audit for these regions. A formal tender has been floated by the Kolkata Police to facilitate the installation process.

Key Locations for Camera Placement

The CCTV cameras will be strategically positioned at multiple road junctions and entry points to maximize coverage. Key proposed locations include:

  • Southern Avenue and S R Das Road entry
  • Kabir Road and S R Das Road crossing
  • Lake Avenue and S R Das Road crossing
  • R Sen Road and S R Das Road crossing
  • Abdul Rasul Avenue and S R Das Road entry
  • Abdul Rasul Avenue and Lake Place entry
  • Lake Place and R Sen Road crossing
  • Lake Temple Road and Lake Place crossing

  • Southern Avenue and Lake Avenue entry

Additional sites encompass Lake Avenue and Dr Satyananda Roy Road, Sarat Chatterjee Avenue and Dr Satyananda Roy Road entry, Southern Avenue and Lake Temple Road entry, and Southern Avenue and Sarat Chatterjee Street entry.

Multifaceted Benefits of Enhanced Surveillance

A police officer highlighted the diverse advantages of this surveillance network. "Additionally, we can ascertain if anti-social activities are being organised close to these security zones. We are also trying to track any suspicious movement. In addition, the CCTV cameras will help us study the traffic situation. These measures will help reduce the number of accidents and avoid traffic congestion," the officer stated.

To illustrate the effectiveness of such systems, police cited the example of the Behala area, which previously lacked adequate CCTV coverage. After the local police installed hundreds of cameras, there was a notable improvement in crime resolution and a deterrent effect on unlawful activities. Traffic police at various crossings have also set up their own CCTV cameras, further enhancing security.

Collaborative Efforts and Broader Impact

In a collaborative approach, Kolkata Police plans to integrate feeds from privately owned CCTV cameras. "We are approaching individuals and trading establishments so that they share their camera footage with us," explained an officer. This integrated network will extend surveillance to approximately 10 schools in the Lake and Kalighat areas, contributing to improved law and order. An officer from south Kolkata emphasized, "It will also help us to improve the general law and order situation in the area."

This proactive measure underscores the Kolkata Police's commitment to leveraging technology for enhanced public safety, ensuring a secure environment for all citizens in these bustling urban zones.
