Kolkata Businessman Found Dead in Flat: Police Detain Two Suspects

In a shocking incident in Kolkata, a 37-year-old man was discovered deceased with a bullet injury on the right side of his head inside his residence at Nabagram under the jurisdiction of Narendrapur Police Station on Sunday night. The victim has been identified as Arup Mondal, a local businessman involved in building materials, who resided alone in the flat.

Family Alleges Foul Play and Financial Motive

The family members of the deceased have strongly alleged foul play, with the victim's younger brother, Swarup Mondal, lodging a formal complaint. He claims that the death was a planned murder linked to financial transactions. According to the complaint, a woman acquainted with Mondal allegedly called an associate to the flat and orchestrated the crime due to a monetary dispute.

Shankar Naskar, the victim's maternal uncle, raised significant questions about the possibility of suicide. He pointed out that Mondal was left-handed, yet the gunshot wound was on the right side of his head, casting doubt on a self-inflicted injury. Lakshan Naskar, another relative, described Mondal as a strong-willed and fighting-minded individual, asserting he was not the type to take his own life.

Police Investigation and Detentions

Alerted by local residents, police officers arrived at the scene to find Mondal's body lying in a pool of blood. Authorities have detained two individuals for questioning: Mondal's so-called 'girlfriend' and one of her associates. A senior officer from Narendrapur Police Station stated, "We have initiated an investigation based on the complaint filed by the victim's family. Firearms and ammunition have been seized from the scene. The detained individuals are being interrogated."

From the spot, police confiscated two firearms and several rounds of ammunition. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death, while investigators are probing whether this was a case of murder or suicide.

Conflicting Accounts and Suspicious Circumstances

According to the detained woman's statement to police, Mondal had borrowed approximately Rs 30 lakh from her. She claimed that whenever she demanded repayment, Mondal would threaten to die by suicide and implicate her. However, relatives contest this narrative, suggesting the woman's presence at the flat at the time of the incident, along with unusual behavior, is highly suspicious.

Lakshan Naskar further alleged that there should be evidence showing the woman received money from Mondal, and a delay in payment might have triggered the event. He emphasized that proper police interrogation would reveal the truth, urging cooperation from flat residents.

Broader Context and Ongoing Probe

A local businessman revealed that Mondal had associations with multiple women and allegedly maintained links with betting and gambling circles, adding complexity to the case. Police have launched a comprehensive probe to ascertain the exact sequence of events, focusing on forensic evidence, witness statements, and financial records.

The investigation remains active as authorities work to piece together the circumstances leading to Mondal's death, balancing family allegations of murder with the possibility of suicide amidst conflicting testimonies and physical evidence.
