Kolkata Law College to Undergo PWD Inspection for CCTV Camera Installation

The Public Works Department (PWD) of Kolkata is set to conduct a detailed inspection at a prominent law college in the southern part of the city. This visit aims to assess the precise number of CCTV cameras required to enhance security across the entire campus.

Background and Security Concerns

This security review comes in response to a distressing incident that occurred in June last year, where a first-year student was raped on the college premises. The event highlighted significant gaps in the existing surveillance infrastructure, prompting urgent calls for improved safety measures.

Currently, the college operates with only three functional CCTV cameras, which are deemed insufficient for comprehensive monitoring. College authorities have expressed a strong need for more than 70 cameras to ensure thorough coverage and deter potential criminal activities.

Funding Approval and Inspection Process

To address this critical issue, the college submitted a formal request for a fund of Rs 12 lakh to finance the installation of additional CCTV cameras. After a thorough review, the finance department has granted final approval for this amount.

However, the release of funds is contingent upon a PWD inspection. The department will evaluate the campus layout and security requirements to determine the exact number of cameras needed. Sources indicate that this inspection is scheduled to take place next week.

Comprehensive Security Measures

In addition to the CCTV camera installation, the college is also in the process of appointing ex-servicemen to bolster security personnel on campus. This multi-faceted approach aims to create a safer environment for students and staff alike.

Once the PWD completes its assessment and submits a report, the installation process will proceed accordingly. This step-by-step protocol ensures that resources are allocated efficiently and effectively to meet the college's security needs.

The combined efforts of enhanced surveillance and trained security personnel are expected to significantly improve campus safety, providing peace of mind to the college community.
