A family's post-vacation return to their Kolkata home turned into a nightmare when they discovered a major burglary. The incident, involving theft of cash, jewellery, and crucial travel documents, has prompted police to issue fresh security advisories for residents.
Valuables and Passports Stolen in Hastings Flat
The theft occurred at a flat on Clyde Row in the Hastings area of Kolkata. The resident, a businessman, was away on a vacation to Kerala with his wife and their one-year-old daughter. Police suspect the burglary took place between December 26 and January 2, precisely when the family was travelling.
The total estimated loss from the theft is a staggering Rs 30 lakh. The stolen items include:
- Rs 2.5 lakh in cash.
- A significant amount of gold jewellery and precious ornaments.
- Branded watches and high-end sunglasses.
- Surprisingly, the family's three passports were also taken.
The businessman expressed particular concern over the loss of the passports, citing the serious risk of their potential misuse for illegal activities.
Unlocked Almirah in Guest Room Became Target
An unusual circumstance likely made the thieves' job easier. Before leaving for their holiday, the family was having a digital lock installed on the almirah in their master bedroom. As a precaution, they temporarily moved all their valuables to a locked almirah in the guest room.
This guest room storage unit typically held miscellaneous items like bank documents, small coins, and low-value personal articles. The burglars apparently targeted this specific almirah.
The discovery was made upon the family's return. The businessman first noticed his watches and a ring were missing. A check of the guest-room almirah revealed the full extent of the theft, confirming that the break-in happened in their absence.
Police Investigation and Crucial Security Advice
The businessman filed a detailed complaint at the Hastings Police Station. He provided copies of identification documents for all domestic staff for police records and reference. He has also requested necessary police documentation for passport re-issuance and insurance claims.
Officers from Hastings Police Station, along with the detective department, are actively investigating the case. Highlighting the need for constant vigilance, a senior officer from the anti-burglary section at Lalbazar offered clear guidelines to prevent such crimes.
The officer recommended a few simple but effective steps:
- Always keep almirahs and cupboards securely locked, especially when away.
- Ensure the identity of all domestic help is thoroughly verified by police.
- Avoid discussing financial matters or travel plans in front of domestic staff.
- Ideally, hire help from trusted agencies that come with solid recommendations from multiple sources.
This incident serves as a stark reminder for residents, especially those planning holidays, to review their home security measures and be cautious with information shared within the household.
