A routine police operation in Kolkata's Tangra area descended into violent chaos on Monday, leaving at least seven policemen injured and their official vehicles severely damaged. The incident unfolded after officers successfully arrested two men wanted in separate burglary cases.
From Raid to Riot: How the Situation Escalated
The trouble began around 10 am on DC Dey Road. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team from Bidhannagar South and Bidhannagar North police stations conducted a raid. The operation led to the arrest of two accused individuals: Suraj Das, alias Chikna, and another man named Jumrati.
However, moments after the suspects were taken into custody, the situation took an unexpected turn. A group of women confronted the police team, alleging that a young boy had been injured during the raid. What started as a verbal protest quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.
Violent Mob Attack on Police Personnel
The officers soon found themselves surrounded and blocked from leaving the narrow lanes. The mob began jostling the policemen, and the protest turned violent. The police personnel were punched, kicked, and pelted with bricks and glass bottles.
One police vehicle was badly damaged in the onslaught. With the situation rapidly spiralling out of control, the officers made a desperate escape. They scrambled into a single car, squeezing in alongside the two arrested men, and forced their way out of the hostile neighbourhood.
Aftermath and Ongoing Investigation
All injured officers were rushed to a Bidhannagar sub-divisional hospital for medical treatment. The Bidhannagar police commissionerate has since lodged a formal complaint at the Tangra Police Station regarding the attack on its personnel and the vandalism of government property.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the challenges faced by law enforcement during operations in densely populated urban areas. An investigation is underway to identify the individuals involved in the mob violence.
