Kolhapur Court Delivers Life Sentence in 2022 Murder Case
In a significant verdict, the chief district and sessions court in Kolhapur has sentenced a 40-year-old man to life imprisonment for the murder of his friend in a case that dates back to June 2022. The judgment was pronounced by Judge Kavita Agrawal, who emphasized the brutal nature of the crime.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The tragic event occurred under the jurisdiction of the Karvir police station. Sandeep Mane, a centring contractor, allegedly stabbed his 28-year-old friend Bharat Naik following a minor dispute. According to prosecution accounts, on the evening of June 24, 2022, Naik referred to Mane as "savkar" (money lender) while Mane was counting money. Mane reportedly explained that the cash was intended for paying workers' salaries, sparking a verbal altercation.
After initially leaving the scene, Naik returned to Juni Sonatalli village with another individual, leading to another confrontation. During this clash, Mane is accused of pulling out a sharp knife and stabbing Naik in the stomach and neck. One of Naik's friends attempted to provide first aid by tying a handkerchief around his neck to control bleeding before rushing him to CPR Hospital. Tragically, Naik succumbed to his injuries the following morning while undergoing treatment.
Legal Proceedings and Court Observations
The case was registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation). The prosecution was led by Additional Public Prosecutor Manjusha Patil.
Judge Kavita Agrawal noted that the accused acted in a "cruel and unusual manner" while committing the crime. Sandeep Mane has been in judicial custody since his arrest in 2022, and the court's life imprisonment sentence reflects the severity of his actions.
